Everyday Favourite Part IV – Concealer

Let’s be honest. We all have those nights, that are way too short to catch some good hours of sleep. Wether we partied too much, worked too much, it’s been to hot or to cold, the mailman woke you or whatever kept you from your much needed beauty sleep. Well, it’s noticeable, especially in your under eye area. And that’s something we do not want, so we need some magical things to make them disappear, as quickly as possible.

And I have a special little treat, to look more awake and fresh. And the best thing about it, it’s absolutely affordable.

May I present to you the Maybelline Instant Anti-Age Rewind?! I am so in love with this cutie. But why?

Well, first of all, it’s a drug store product and therefore it just costs around 9 €/ 8$. Of course, the price depends on where you’re getting it from. But the good thing is, you can get it almost everywhere – you’ll never run out of it… except they’ll stop producing it, but let’s hope that’s never gonna happen.

I mentioned, it’s a drug store product, so keep that in mind, while rating this product.

I myself love the consistency of this concealer. It’s a medium coverage concealer, with a creamy, but not too creamy texture. You can blend it easily and it feels pretty light on the skin. It does not dry out my skin, which is a highly sensitive point for me, as you may remember from previous posts 😉 I myself do not set it, and it works just great. It tends to sink in the fine lines under my eyes, but just if I don’t blend it properly. I use the shade 01 Fair.

But the thing with the shades is a pretty tricky one. In most drugstores you can choose between 01 Fair and 02 Light. But originally there are 6 Shades to choose from – I’ve never seen more than three, to be honest. I tried to order from the Maybelline site (the German one, since I live in Germany), but there you can pick only from the two shades mentioned before.

01 Fair, 02 Light, 03 Medium, 04 Honey, 05 Neutralizer, 06 Brightener
Maybelline-New-York-Instant-Age-Rewind-Eraser-Dark-Circles-Treatment-Concealer-all

In the little plastic tubes with the little puff on top to apply the concealer, all the shades look pretty dark, somehow yellowish, except for the Brightener, but this one I’ve never seen live. Once applied to your skin, the shades will surprise. They aren’t as dark as they appear in the packaging. You can use the puff to apply the concealer and to blend it, you can remove the puff and apply the concealer only with a brush (this will waste less product) or you can apply the concealer with the puff and blend it with a beautyblender – which is my favorite way to apply it… the beautyblender is my holy grail, but that’s a different thing 😀

Another thing I love about this concealer is, that it has no weird smell to it, like other concealers – the UD Naked Skin for example, had one of the worst smells ever. This one smells pretty neutral. And I like that the concealer does not cake and does not need a touchup throughout the day. So that’s a clear recommendation from me! Try it out, fall in love!

For a drugstore product it’s absolutely amazing!!!

Why I’m just not into baking

In todays post I want to address one of the hottest topics in the beauty-community and why I’m just not in love with it and probably never will be: The “baking” hype. Kinda sounds like it has something to do with the kitchen, doesn’t it? And although I’m sitting in mine at the moment, this trend has nothing to do with cooking 😀

So what’s baking?

To “bake” or “cook” your face (this are the used terms) means, that your let your concealer sit on your face for a given time period (around 10-20 minutes) . Why? Because you want your makeup melt into your skin with the help of your own body heat. The thing with this technique is, that it will highlight some of your facial features even more, as if you would just use a concealer and blend it right away, because it’ll the makeup will change color and texture during this process. But that’s what you want. It also is supposed to prevent your concealer from moving throughout the day and to keep your complexion flawless and crease free.

Where does it come from?

Baking is an old thing which goes back to ancient Egypt, but was brought back to the makeup community through the Drag Scene. Some might seen it on “Drag Race” (if that’s a TV format your familiar with) or got tips directly from some of the beautiful Drag Queens out there. And some might caught this trend when Kim K.’s makeup artist revealed the secrets behind her flawless complexion. And suddenly everyone baked their face…

What products do you need?

  • a concealer
  • a damp beautyblender or other makeup sponge
  • a loose powder (I prefer translucent powder, some use banana powder or even white powder)
  • a fluffy brush
  • a hell lot of time

s870618-main-Lhero This is the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, which I prefer to use for baking (if I bake)

How to? The Process of baking (at least how I do it)

  1. After moisturizing my skin and applying my primer, I apply my foundation and contour my face
  2. Next I apply my concealer, where I think it’s needed. The important thing is, use a cream concealer, because it’ll show the best results. And keep in mind to apply the concealer in a triangular shape under your eyes
  3. Do not blend! Not yet! I let the concealer unblended for at least 10 minutes. Most of the time I go for 15 minutes
  4. Then I blend everything with my beautyblender and set the concealer with a loose powder. (I let the powder sit on the blended concealer for around 5 minutes)
  5. Then I brush away the excess powder with a fluffy brush.
  6. I set everything with my Finishing Spray.

There might be some other techniques, some people do not let their concealer sit unblended for that long and blend it right after applying and set it then with a coat of loose powder and let the powder sit for around 15-20 minutes on their face, but this is something that’s not working for me because of my very dry skin. I have the feeling, the longer I let my powder sit on my face, the drier my skin tends to look, even with finishing spray.

baking

This might be one of the most popular pictures on baking your face. I took it from Heidi Hamoud’s youtube channel. I do not have a pic of me baking, therefore I took her’s, because to be honest, she looks gorgeous in it.

When should you bake?

Well apparently there is no exact answer to this question, as everyone should do as they please and some might find it good to bake everyday, some may think it’s totally overboard. The thing with baking is, that it does help, if you’re having a shooting or you’re doing your makeup just for the purpose of taking a bunch of selfies. It tend to help against smudging and looking like a panda throughout the day and if you want a smooth, “flawless” complexion… But beware. The flawlessness is just real in some distance, because without all the filters and face tunes and all this stuff you are able to tell, when someone’s baked their face.

So why am I not into baking?

I do think, that it’s a great method to achieve a flawless finish for a short amount of time and to take some pretty darn good pictures. There are some benefits to bake your face, there’s no doubt in it. But (!!!) – and here’s comes my problem with this trend – it’s incredible time consuming and I do think that although it may look good in pictures it does not really look that good in person. Imagine you’re applying layer, after layer, after layer, after layer on your skin. This might not look that harmful in some areas of your face, but especially on such delicate areas, where the skin is so thin and sensitive, like in your under eye section, it is so damn visible. Not only will you clearly see that you’ve baked, when using it under your eyes – at least on my dry skin – it will emphasize all the small lines and creases I have in this area. And there is no difference if I moisturize my skin or not. I’ve tried it in so many different ways and used this method on such a good moisturized skin, that it’s almost ridiculous, but every time it looked so damn dry and just not pretty that I’m not willing to go through this procedure every time to get such results. And there is the thing, that your skin will feel kinda smooth in the spots you’ve baked, but I do not like the feeling after a couple of hours, because it feels like the powder sinks in even more and dries out my already dry skin. So that’s why I won’t fall in love with this trend like others did. But it has it perks. So feel free to bath your skin in loose powder and concealer. Just don’t bake your face every day – it just isn’t good for your skin – it needs to breathe too 😉

And and be careful when baking! Use a powder that won’t kick back with some horrible white stains while using a flash for pictures. I guess we’ve all seen celebrities on the red carpet, where the powder wasn’t flash-proved 😀

Here you have some examples 😀

Pictures taken from Perez Hilton.

Some powders that won’t reflect with white stains while being photographed with a flash are the Ben Nye Powders and for example the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder.

Everyday Favourite Part III – Finishin Spray

First of all, my lovely ones out there. I am so sorry for being absent for such a long time. I really had so much struggles in my personal life lately, which I first had to figure out, before I could continue with the things I love – beauty and makeup. But now I am back on track and I promise you, there won’t be such a long period where I’m keeping quiet again. 🙂

So for todays article I want to continue with me Favourite series and I believe we’ve reached part 3 – and I want to dedicate it to one of the most important things, if you’re trying to wear a full face of makeup throughout a whole day: A good finishing! I’ve tested quiet a few, from cheeper ones to high end ones and there are quiet a few good ones and some, I wouldn’t recommend, because I don’t feel like they’re doing anything at all for your skin or your makeup. But there is one, I’m coming back to every time and which works for me so pretty good and that is the MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ – Finishing Mist!

fix+.jpg

What’s so good about the Fix+?

There are many reasons I like the Fix+ as a finishing spray. First of all it’s so versatile. I use it sometimes to spray my face even before applying makeup, if I feel it’s too dry. I wet my beautyblender sometimes with it, so it makes applying makeup easier (btw, you should always wet your beautyblender…nobody’s using them dry :D). I also wet my brushed sometimes before applying some eyeshadows, if I want my shadow to be more covering and have a more intense look. I love doing this especially, when it’s a foiled shadow. And then I use it for what it’s designed to be used – as a finishing spray. Sometimes I spray my face throughout the day a couple of times with this little wonder, just to refresh my face. And if you’re using this for all these reasons, it’s a truly amazing finishing spray and you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re using it as a setting spray, you will hate on it and for a reason.. Because it is NOT a setting spray so therefore it’s designed to disappoint you – if you’re using the product out of purpose… Let me tell you about the difference…

Setting Spray of Finishing Spray?

A fixing/setting spray is designed to lock in your makeup so it won’t move, kinda like a hairspray for your makeup. But be careful… I’ve seen people use actual hairspray to fix their makeup and this may work, yes, but please… your skin deserve way more. So spend some money on real setting sprays if you want to achieve the lock-down of your makeup. It comes in a mist or spray form, is transparent and does not change the color of your makeup. You just spray your face with the cooling mist, and let it naturally dry. Some good Settings sprays are for example the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray.

A Finishing Spray is a little different. It’s supposed to take away the cake of your face. You know what I mean right? When you put on layer after layer after layer of makeup and powder and concealers and all this stuff on your face and it leaves you kinda cakey – meaning you can spot from a mile away that you are actually wearing all these layers. But that’s not what you want! You want your skin to look smooth and soft and fresh. And that’s what a setting spray is for.

So as a recap: setting sprays lock in your makeup and finishing sprays are supposed to make you look fresher and softer and take away the cake!

Some facts:

  • contains 100 ml/3,4 US fl OZ
  • Ingredients: water, glycerin, butylene glycol, cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) extract, camellia sinensis leaf extract, tocopheryl acetate, caffeine, panthenol, arginine, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, PPG-26-buteth-26, fragerance, disodium edta, phenoxyethaol
  • price point: about 22 €/24$
  • where to get: online on the official MAC-Website or sites that sell makeup (Douglas, Sephora etc.), in your local Sephora, Douglas or where ever they retail MAC products

So if you’re looking for a good finishing spray, this is the one I’m recommending you and I literally use it every day! But keep in mind – finishing spray, not fixing spray 😉

♡ Sugarbearhair Hair Vitamins ♡ Recap

In December I told you, that I’m trying out this cute electric blue hair vitamins everyone and their mother was raving about.

(Picture taken from their official Instagram page Sugarbearhair Instagram)

And now it’s time to recap everything and ask myself – Is it worth purchasing it?

Disclaimer: this is just my opinion on it and the experience I’ve made with this product. Wheter it’s worked for me or not (you’ll find out, if you keep on reading) – that was just my personal thing. You may have gotten other results and thankfully we are all different and unique in our own ways and our bodies work different. So what works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. So no harsh feelings here 😉

What did I notice after taking Sugarbearhair Vitamins?

Well, I did notice a difference and I noticed it after I guess two weeks. My hair did look shinier and the most noticeable difference was, that I had so much less hair loss. I normally am loosing so much hair, that it’s a wonder I still have some on my head. But after two weeks of taking these vitamins I noticed that I’m losing less hair and they tend to break less – which made me very happy. Before I took the vitamins I cut my hair a bit to get rid off the dead ends. And my hair – normally taking forever to grow even the slightest bit – grew out to the exact same length I had before cutting the ends, which was about 5 cm (about 1.96 inches). For me that was a huge deal, because my hair really takes forever to grow, due to all the damage I’ve done to it. I’ve noticed it as well on my hairline and I had to dye my hair more often, since I’m not a natural brunette 😀

Is it worth puchasing?

So I have to say, I liked that it worked. You can’t expect wonders, that’s for sure. The human body takes time to get to a certain level of vitamins to work – it has to be build up and this takes at least two weeks, until you can notice it. Therefore you can’t expect it to work after two days – it takes some patience to notice a difference. But there is one and so I can’t tell you that these cute bears aren’t working, because they do. And if you like a fun twist to your haircare and do not want the somehow uninviting taste of other hair vitamins this may be a good choice for you. But you have to be aware that you need at least two months worth of sugarbearhair vitamins – and they are about 30 $ (28€) – depends on where you’re living + the shipping. So for me in Germany, I’m paying for one month worth of these gummies 39 € (41 $)… That’s pretty heavy. So it’s worth considering.

Would I purchase them again?

Let me put it this way… They worked – yes! They are cute – yes! They taste good – yes! But they are expensive AF and there are other hair vitamins for half the amount of money which work just as good as these cuties. So I love the concept and I like what it has done to my hair, but for me, it’s a pass – just because of the price. I’d rather take the ugly tasting vitamins out there, which work as good as these. But no hate to them – they are cute and they work. It’s just a personal preference. I recommend them, if you’re willing to spend that amount of money on vitamins, but I wouldn’t purchase them again. At least not for this price point.

UD Naked Skin Concealer – Kiss or Miss?

Oh boy do I hate it, when this happens…

You went out and bought some pricey makeup you were absolutely sure you would love. Why wouldn’t you? It’s from a high end makeup brand, with good reviews which you’re loving – so this hella expensive thing has to be amazing.

And then you’re trying it out and it feels kinda… naaaah…. not right – but it you spent so much money on it, that you’re falling into a state of denial. There has to be something wrong with the way you applied it. It’s your fault, not the products! It just has to be…

So you’re trying it again, trying to make it work this time, changing the way you’re applying it, redoing your makeup… trying to change the lighting, trying to change the circumstances, but still the product does not work as it’s supposed to and you get mad. Mad at yourself for spending money on it. Mad at the product for just not performing as it has to.

This lately happened to me. I wanted to try out the Urban Decay Naked Skin weightless complete coverage concealer in shade fair neutral I expected to love it – on their website the customers raved so hard about it, that I thought it can’t be anything but perfect, but I was so, so, so wrong…

15267653_1154729354610844_1001145902104214673_n

So it comes in this bottle of 5 ml/0.16 fl oz and retails for about 23 €/28$, which is pricy yes. But UD is a high end brand, so that’s something you have to expect. It has a flat doe-foot applicator, which I don’t mind, I find it quiet easy to apply my products with this applicator. But the smell…. Oh my god, why the hell does this thing have to smell so freakin chemical? I hate it, really! It just makes me cringe every time I open it up.

As I mentioned, I tried my hardest to make this thing work and tried to love it. I applied this concealer, everyone raved so hard about, on different occasions, with different foundations as a base, with sponges, with brushes, even with my fingers, tried a setting spray, priming and I could go on and on but I am so sorry it simply sucked for me, big time!

I have super dry skin and I peel my face on a weekly basis 2-3 times, keep it hydrated, clean it every night and apply primer before doing my makeup just to make sure, my skin won’t make such a trouble when using makeup-products. But this concealer just makes my skin look so freakishly dry, as if I never tried hydrating it in my whole life. It really accentuates any dry patches you have on your skin and I do not like the finish at all. It just looks so wrong end weird. It does not work on my under eyes, nor on the bridge of my nose or any other part of my face. It’s hard to spread, does not melt with your skin, it looks patchy and is so wrong on so many levels… And did I mention this weird smell? Yeah, it bothers me, that’s why I had to mention it again…

I really do wonder why? I swatched it on my hand, before purchasing it, and just the swatch looked like such a high coverage concealer, but after spreading it… no, thank you.

I don’t get, why it’s so high rated, really not even the slightest bit. But then again, I do have very dry skin, so maybe it works on different skin types better.

I love UD, but this is definitely a miss for me. Never will I ever purchase this.

Make-up Factory’s Mat Lip Fluid

Hello, you beautiful people out there.

Today I’m reviewing some liquid lipsticks for you. I love liquid lipsticks and I love it, when they’re drying down to a matte finish. And these beauties right here, from Make-up factory are my newest addition to my little lipstick family.

15192541_1146683952082051_7513054546679264943_n

Here we have three special cuties. Soft Raspberry, Ultra Pink and Violet Mauve are their names. I stumbled across makeup factory in my local drugstore, actually a year ago, but totally forgot I purchased a lipstick from them. So I stood there, looking for some new makeup and was drawn to these intense pink (Believe me, the picture doesn’t do it’s justice) and purchased the Ultra Pink Mat Lip Fluid for 12,95 €.

I was impressed with the color – it’s pretty intense, kinda blue toned in some lighting. I wore it to some different occasions with different looks and I liked the outcome. So I went and purchased a couple weeks later (after 30-40 minutes of swatching and driving my boyfriend insane with tons of questions) Soft Raspberry and Violet Mauve.

To be honest, they are kinda hard to apply, I think the formula could be a little smoother. They seem to be pretty sheer, so to get a full coverage you have to layer it 2-4 times, but the good thing about them is, that you actually can layer them, without them getting chunky our drying out extremely crusty.

15319314_1146683948748718_4576984466504973131_n.jpg

In the swatch comparison you can see, that the colors look like they appear in the bottles. And while layering them over my ink, you can see how pigmented they are. I think the pink one looks even nicer in real life. They dry down matte, but they do not feel drying which I love, because my lips are dry on their own and need special care in this department.

Make-up factory claims, that this lip fluid is longlasting and it really is. I only need some minor touchups throughout the day and they stay pretty much in place while eating or kissing – you’ll not be left with some ugly stains around your mouth. But they tend to stain your lips a little, so keep that in mind, if that’s something that’s bothering you. I remove them with my regular makeup wipes, but especially the pink one is hard to get rid off. Decide yourself, whether you like it or not. I actually don’t mind. Oh and the pink one smells kinda like watermelons! I love that!

They are not very outrageous with the color range you can pick from, Ultra Pink seems to be the exotic one in this line. Along with these three I purchased they have 7 more to choose from. I wished the colors would be a little more daring and wider in range. But I think I’m going to purchase a couple more, because they are lovely for everyday looks. So go ahead and try them out! 😉

Is it really worth it? – NYX Slide on eye liner

This time I’m going to review the NYX eye liners. But not just any liner. Let me quickly type down the name, which is so freakin’ long… Okay are you ready? Are you? Here it is:

“NYX slide on, glide on, stay on & definitely a turn on waterproof, extreme shine eye liner (This eye liner is so good, the name had to be this long)”

This was an exact quote of the name, written on each of these liners. Pretty bold to pull of such a statement NYX. The question is, is this eye liner really that good or is it just a scam? I’ve purchased them, I’ve tried them in a couple of looks and here you are, you beautiful people – a review served by me.

nyx

I myself purchased these four shades, mentioned from top to bottom:

SL 18 Glitzy Gold

SL 12 Azure

SL 03 Pretty Violet

SL 09 Tropical Green

I believe there are 16 shades in total, each one of them retails for 5,99 € / 8,00 $ – depending on where from you are purchasing it. NYX itself is very affordable, cruelty-free and in my opinion a pretty darn good brand.

The liner itself is very creamy and buttery, the appliance is easy and quick – but (!!!) if you want to do precise work with them the liner has to be sharpen first. The tip wears down pretty quick, so you have to sharpen it more often than other liners. The four shades I got are all mixed with glitter, so if you’re not into this, I wouldn’t recommend buying it. But then again, the liner itself is entitled as ‘extreme shine’, so you gotta have to expect it anyway – so don’t act surprise!

nyx-swatch

As you can see in the swatch picture, the gold and the green are so pigmented, it’s insane. This is just one layer, so you can see, he pigmentation is there. The blue one is a little sheer and the violet one is patchy. You can layer them as often as you like, so there’s no problem it that but keep in mind, that you can’t really blend them out. I use them often in my makeup looks and they do stay on really long. For instance, I cleaned after I did the swatches my bathroom and had water and cleanser all over my hand and they were still on there. Not as intense as it was before, obviously, but still it’s there. And as I’m sitting here, writing this entry (I believe five hours after swatching them) they are still in place. I even tried smearing them but all my effort did, was spreading the glitter over my hand, which I don’t mind at all, since you can bath me in glitter and I would be the happiest girl on earth.

So would I recommend buying these liners? I do, I really do! They are affordable, look good and stay on – I guess the long kick ass name does pay off. I’m going to purchase at least 3 more shades.
